Everything I know about marketing strategy, I learned over 16 years at my very first job at a global ad agency. It became my (extended) “marketing bootcamp.”
It was tough discipline, on-the-spot reworks, and a bunch of "holy crap" moments, every day, every week, every year--under the watchful eyes of some pretty intense mentors (not all of whom were the lovey-dovey type).
But, the real turning point occurred after I left that agency. The surprise I’ve uncovered since has been a game-changing revelation among the small and mid-market businesses I work with.
SMB business owners, let's say those between $2 and $15 million, have a “day job.” They do their work, and they're experts at what they do. They wish they could just hire somebody to come in from the outside and set the game plan for marketing, and they’d have it all worked out.
“That's the only way your team is going to march to your drumbeat.”
This is deeply flawed. The most successful strategic projects I've worked on have been "do it with you” versus “do it for you." That's the key. Because you, as the business leader, the business owner, the CEO, need to drive the marketing roadmap you’re committed to.
That's the only way your team is going to march to your drumbeat.
How do I know for sure? My latest video shares some of the success stories I’ve been privileged to be a part of--in that “do it with you” relationship--just in the past year.
